Your Support Makes a Difference…

September 1, 2007 at about 8:00 pm I was notified that my father had passed suddenly and under suspicious circumstances. By 11:30 pm the foundation had secured both flight and accommodations for me and my family to meet with our siblings to finalize our father’s affairs. This was a tremendous breakthrough in a very tough circumstance. For us, the Alpharetta Public Safety Foundation made completion and closure possible.

I was the first person to be helped by the foundation. In 2004 my daughter was diagnosed with Leukemia and the foundation gave us money that helped us get through the initial financial problems that came up during the first few weeks of the diagnosis.
In May of 2010 I was involved in a horrible accident and own to Atlanta Medical Center. With my condition being critical, it was obvious that my stay in the hospital was going to be very long, it ended up being 27 days.
The Alpharetta Public Safety Foundation was there for my family and myself during our time of need. In 2012 my wife was diagnosed with Clival Chordoma, which is an extremely rare bone cancer in the skull. She underwent a complicated 11 hour surgery at Emory and spent over a month in the hospital recovering. She then underwent 8 weeks of proton radiation treatment in Boston. As you can imagine, this sudden diagnosis shook our family. We worried about how we would deal with it all, especially, the financial side of things. The Foundation was extremely generous. They provided us with financial assistance that alleviated much of our worry and stress over medical bills and the mounting expenses that we incurred while staying in Boston for her treatment. We could not have handled it all without the Foundation’s help and we are so thankful they were there for us.

When I tore my bicep in 2016 on duty, without asking for anything, I received a check from the foundation to cover lost over time and extra job income.
Receiving the scholarship from the Public Safety Foundation has proven instrumental in my educational endeavors. The support which we receive from the foundation shows that solidarity is not simply limited to those within the confines of our organization, rather a sense of community extends to the local businesses and citizens of Alpharetta.
When vehicles were broken into at some of the fire stations, the Foundation gave money to AFD members to cover the cost of repairs or insurance deductibles. I really appreciate their promptness in resolving the matter.
Back in 2009 the ranch style house I was renting flooded during the heavy storms in the Kennesaw/ Acworth Area. We did not have renter’s insurance and lost pretty much anything that touched the floor. The Public Safety Foundation gave my family money to help out. It was very appreciated.

My wife and I had our second child born within the first year of being employed at the Alpharetta Department of Public Safety. I did not have much Paid Time Off built up and could not aford to take three days off to spend time with my newborn daughter and help my wife recover. The Alpharetta Public Safety Foundation stepped in and cut me a check that allowed me to take TWO WEEKS off work without falling behind financially. Needless to say, we felt very blessed to be supported in such a profound way!

I have a rather large family, and everyone was constantly at the hospital caring for me and there to assist with the tough decisions. Knowing that my family would also be there for a very long time, Director Gary George presented a check from the foundation to my family to help cover lodging, food and any other items they might need during their stay with me. It has been over 7 years now and we still remember the caring, generosity and concern shown by the foundation and Alpharetta Department of Public Safety during that difficult time. We will be forever grateful.

When my youngest son was born, he had to spend the first 90 days at CHOA Egleston. My wife and I were going nonstop trying to balance work, hospital time, and our time with our other son. During this stretch, I was presented with a check from the Foundation. This was unexpected and greatly appreciated by my wife and me as it off set the lack of any extra jobs and helped with travel costs from our home in Gwinnett to the hospital.
June 1st, 2009, I, along with some other officers, were involved in a shooting on Douglas Road. This was the 1st shooting that we had the GBI assist us, that being the case, the average turn-around-time for the GBI was 8 weeks to wrap up their investigation. That was 8 weeks of NO Overtime & NO extra jobs. As a single dad of 2 amazing kids, the bills kept coming. The Public Safety Foundation stepped up and wrote several of us involved a check. This check was written to help me financially and a crucial time for me. Since then, I have always thought highly of the Foundation & helped out whenever I could.
Approximately 8 years ago, I went to the foundation with a proposition for new pediatric bags for our apparatus. We were currently using a Home Depot toolbox that was never uniform from engine to engine. When we did have a pediatric call, the box had to be poured out on the floor to find anything. The foundation funded approximately $12,000 for new bags and the equipment to go in them. We now have a more comprehensive system with top notch supplies that is envied when seen by other departments. Since the day that the bags went in service, I have polled the crews that have used the bag during the resuscitation of a child or infant. All of them state that the call went better and they gave the child the best chance of survival because of this grant and the bags that it funded.

The Alpharetta Public Safety Foundation was an amazing blessing in aiding me when my brother fell ill and almost passed. Because of this I was able to spend quality time and assist him with his medical treatment.
Last year I had a fairly extreme medical crisis, and I was in the hospital from July 2016 until March 2017. During part of that time I was in a coma and the doctors didn’t think I would make it. My wife spent every day, all day in the hospital with me. Disability and PTO donations helped me keep up with my salary, but my wife ran out of PTO early on. Her job allowed her to take emergency leave, but couldn’t pay her. She was contacted by the Public Safety Foundation, which gave her a check that helped us make bills during that time. Without the help of the Foundation, we would have had to skip paying some of our bills. We are extremely grateful for this help.
I received funds while I had my nieces and nephew staying with me after my brother passed away in 2012 and our furnace broke. My stepdaughter received a scholarship last year in her first year attending Georgia Tech, which was helpful because even though in state and she has HOPE, GT is expensive.
In my first year with Alpharetta, the foundation awarded me a $2000 scholarship for graduate school.
Three years ago, I was diagnosed with an aggressive form of Sarcoma cancer. After weeks in the hospital for treatment, money got extremely tight. Christmas was upon us and we were struggling to have Christmas for our 2 children. The foundation was a life saver with some very kind and generous donations that helped our family with bills and helped give our boys a Christmas... We are forever grateful.” -A recipient of the Foundation Funds.
